The Kill Clause by Lisa Unger

This short story hits with assassins with childhood trauma, workplace drama, and emotional shrapnel that I devoured like a gremlin with a blood-sugar issue. Paige is a killer, raised in a horror movie, trained by a woman who rescued her, only to turn her into a weapon, and the moment she refuses to murder a man and his 4-year-old daughter, her name hits the kill list like a Hallmark special from hell.

Also, this is apparently categorized as a holiday book, which is hilarious because it has approximately zero holiday vibes unless your seasonal tradition is murder.

Enter Julian: the ex-husband she ghosted but somehow is still cosmically linked to. They have not spoken in basically centuries (not really, but trauma, ya know?), but he sends one cryptic warning and then crashes through death’s front door to save her like a feral knight with marriage issues.

They run. They bleed. They angst. They desperately cling to a love they both ruined but never stopped feeling. Then a final twist wipes the company’s slate clean and suddenly they are free to be unhinged together forever.

Five stars because this little book detonated my feelings in under a hundred pages and I adored every violent second.
